I have been invited to speak at a sports injury conference this August in Florida, and I hope that many who regularly come to this site can attend. The First New Paradigms in Endurance Sport Conference will be held at the Andrews Institute in Gulf Breeze, Florida, from August 3-5.
Over 60% of runners are injured every year. If the Center for Disease Control were to evaluate this data they would shut running events down. Insurance companies now are reevaluating the advice to get fit if it involves running and the subsequent injuries and costs of expensive imaging studies and treatments. Injured runners and those trying to achieve additional levels of fitness often turn to cycling and swimming, but most have little formal skill training in these activities.
The solution to running injuries?
We need to develop entirely new approaches to sports injuries and stop just treating the symptoms. We need to look at what factors are causing the injuries and design easier evaluations and specific corrections. We need to focus on prevention.
The three-day course at the Andrews Institute is designed for all health professionals, coaches, and fitness teachers working with active patients and clients. The course questions many current practices in the treatment of both runners and non-runners alike. The course will integrate the basic science, theory, and practice of a number of advanced concepts in endurance sport.
Topics include:
- Injury etiology, theory, diagnosis and treatment
- Evidence based stretching and strength training
- Biomechanical gait analyses taught by the world’s expert Jay Dicharry
- Analysis of the running shoe
- New treatments for acute and chronic musculoskeletal injuries
- Teaching improved running form
- Aerobic development and periodization
- How to evaluate and improve efficiency of your swimmers and bicyclists, to include how to perform a bicycle fit
- Specifics strategies for the aging athlete
- Optional group runs with experts in the field
The three-day course will enable healthcare professionals to efficiently treat their patients whether they are runners or active in other sports.
