Grownups shouldn’t have all the fun when it comes to running naturally. This summer, Two Rivers Treads and For Love of Children’s Education Center will be hosting a Natural Running Camp for middle-school students from July 6-8, and high-school students from July 13-15. (Plans are underway to have an adult Natural Running Camp later in the year. If you are interested in attending, please send me an email. Go here.)
Running is the most natural form of human movement. The Team at Two Rivers Treads have been teaching healthy movement since we opened our store two years ago in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. We were the first store to sell only shoes with minimal to no-heel elevation and focus on form training for every customer. (Now there are almost a dozen running and walking stores with the same philosophy. Go here to see the full list of Natural Running Center partner stores.).
The results in our small town of 3,000 has been very positive –a growing community of passionate runners, young and old, all moving more comfortably and enjoying the mental and physical benefits of running.
At the Natural Running Camp, we want to teach young runners the fun of running and the simple time-tested principles to keep healthy and fresh in the sport. We desire to help and ensure young runners that their best years are far into the future and will extend long after college. By teaching the movement skill of running and aerobic development we hope that they will run more efficient, with less injury, and more comfort.
At the camp, middle-school runners can expect to run anywhere from 3 to 5 miles each day, but this will be adjusted to their individual level. For high school runners, they can expect to run anywhere from 4 to 8 miles, and this will be adjusted to their individual level. But for both groups, the main emphasis will be on skill of running– and not distance.
Finally, the co-organizer of both camps is For Love of Children’s Outdoor Education Center which is one of the nation’s leading facilities teaching outdoor skills and leadership to the youth in a non-urban setting. The center is located on 350 acres near Harpers Ferry, close to the border of West Virginia and Virginia
