NRC Readers this post was shared to our community Mar 22 . The next day the Governor applied these restrictions to our state. It is the right thing to do. Stay well all and keep running outside.
At Two Rivers Treads we have decided to do what we think is right for our community and to set an example of what we feel the entire country needs to do to flatten the curve. Many states now have imposed a two week all businesses closed and stay home order other than essential movements and services. These measures have been effective in countries that have implemented this strategy early like France and Spain. Countries such as Italy and currently our own have not and are feeling the pain. These two excellent articles on Medium explain why this is so important.
Coronavirus: The Hammer and the Dance
The governors of New York, Illinois, and California ,Connecticut, and Pennsylvania have taken this bold but essential step of applying the Hammer even though it is unpopular with many citizens. Our Governor and state have not. Our state has been slow to respond as evidence by the experience of our friends of TRT and Freedoms Run. But I am proud to be working for WVU Medicine as we work to catch up. Here is our resource page.
Many people no doubt will suffer economically from these decisions. But at this time that is not what matters because if the genie gets out of the bottle you can’t put it back in and this is happening right now in New York City and the healthcare reserves are overwhelmed.
We discussed on our Facebook live last week that we have a handful of ventilators in Jefferson County and many of them are used for the usual illnesses that come into our hospital. We have a little margin to scale up this level of support if COVID 19 spikes here.
Those who are elderly and with metabolic illness such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and obesity are the most vulnerable to severe illness and unfortunately this is the majority of our state. My UK friend and colleague Dr. Aseem Malhotra explains it well in this 7 minute clip. We are not crying wolf, this is The Wolf
So for the next two weeks our in- store business will close. As a small business owner we will still continue to support the salary of our employees. This is easy for us as a small retail but the larger local businesses are suffering so give them as much support as you can.
Together we need to get creative if we are going to support small business in these times. We will be offering free order deliveries right to your doorstep. We ask, though, that these orders come from those who do not have any symptoms of illness and who have not recently traveled to a highly affected area. Deliveries will be made to those within a 20 mile radius. We will scale up our online store front for those not in the local area or those wanting their shoes mailed and not delivered by us. We will offer free shipping for all online footwear orders during this time, as well as curbside pick up (hours to be determined) for anyone who wants to come by to pick up their orders. We are happy to help and answer any questions you may have and to walk you through these new services. You can reach us by phone (304) 885-8843, email or through our web site.
We will of course apply all of the same hygiene and sanitation practices that we have been doing in the store all week when it comes to online orders, delivery of any product, and our employee’s standards of constant washing of hands and daily awareness of symptoms.
And finally getting outside and running with a group of one or two and keeping safe distance and avoiding contact is very good for your health mentally and physically so keep the outdoor activity going.
Yours in health and community support,
Dr. Mark and the TRT Team
